Nadia Kabula speaks in front of a class of girls inside the Humanite Nouvelle tailoring training classroom.

Nadia Kabula,18, completed a tailoring training course with CA partner HUNO (Humanite Nouvelle – ‘New Humanity’) and has since taught the new session of girls at HUNO’s centre for street children.

As well as working with boy street children in two main districts of Kinshasa, Humanite Nouvelle also runs a tailoring training course for a small number of girls. This is a preventative project and targets girls at risk of turning to sex work in order to support themselves and their families. These skills provides a source of income, and a few come back the following year to help train other girls with Humanite Nouvelle.

Each training class is followed by a discussion on life skills and issues such as looking beyond cultural gender roles and stereotypes; and striving for self-determination and self-reliance.
